Measuring the impact of Opportunity Zones

Measuring the impact of Opportunity Zones

Opportunity Zones, created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, offer investors capital gains tax incentives to invest in any of the 8,764 eligible Census tracts (12% of all Census tracts in the U.S.). The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution convened an invitation-only, on-the-record conference on Opportunity Zones on November 18, 2022, including presentations of four empirical papers and two roundtables. One roundtable asked: What data are needed to fully evaluate Opportunity Zones? The other asked: What does success for Opportunity Zones look like? The agenda and a list of participants, not all of whom participated in the entire event, are at the end of this summary. The conference was supported by Arnold Ventures . The Hutchins Center was solely responsible for its content. Among the highlights: The best data to measure the impact of OZs is collected by the IRS, but it is available only to Treasury and certain Congressional researchers, limiting the ability of outside, independent researchers to evaluate OZs. Researchers are, however, using commercially available real estate data to try to gauge the impact of OZs, but are constrained by the absence of information about whether particular investments […]

Pound-Dollar Week Ahead Forecast: Fed’s Golden Opportunity Poses Risk

GBP/USD’s recovery could meet resistance near 1.2382 Scope for technical supports at 1.2142, 1.1991 & 1.1990 Fed’s golden QT opportunity potentially a risk multi-week But UK economic data could support short-term rebound Image © Adobe Images The Pound to Dollar exchange rate entered the new week on the front foot and could have scope to rise further in the days ahead but the recent loosening of ‘financial conditions’ risks inviting a Federal Reserve (Fed) quantitative tightening (QT) response that would be a potential risk for Sterling multi-week. Sterling rose against many of its major currency counterparts in Asia trading on Monday as last week’s Dollar selling continued but could soon face obstruction from technical resistances around 1.2302 and 1.2382 on the charts if its rebound continues over the coming days. Dollars have been sold widely in recent trade including after official figures revealed a third successive decline in U.S. inflation for the month of December last Thursday while offering the Fed a glimpse of a possible victory in its battle to return inflation to the 2% target. "Over time, we think the narrative may shift back in a more neutral or Dollar supportive direction—as US economic resilience becomes more […]

Seizing resilience momentum: our existential opportunity

Seizing resilience momentum: our existential opportunity

Global Cooperation The world needs more leaders who can stay focused on long-term resilience objectives while addressing the short-term challenges. The Big Picture Crowdsource Innovation Global disruption is ramping up, everywhere from geopolitics to food and energy. Addressing these disruptions cannot be done in a piecemeal manner — we must confront them systemically. Sustained collective action by the public and private sectors is the only path forward; a resilient growth strategy is not only a necessity, but it also represents an opportunity. In the past year, leaders of public and private-sector organizations have been confronted with a lifetime’s worth of disruption and crises. Global conflict, energy uncertainty, food shortages, accelerating inflation and severe climate events rocked a world still unsettled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, leaders now recognize that our societies and organizations must function in an environment defined by continuous natural and man-made disruptions. These disruptions cannot be addressed in a reactive manner as they arise one after the other and reverberate through our fragile ecosystems and stressed networks. An isolated, short-term focus on a discrete recovery from every crisis is not a feasible path — there aren’t enough resources in the world to do that. We need […]

This is what chief communication officers see as the biggest risks and opportunities in 2023

The Big Picture Crowdsource Innovation From sustainability to complex geopolitical shifts and a potential recession, CEOs have a lot to navigate in 2023. How these issues are managed often falls on the organization’s Chief Communications Officer (CCO). CCOs give their unique perspective on current and impending business risks and opportunities to help CEOs successfully steer their organizations through these turbulent times. Whatever the size of your organization, your customers, employees, suppliers, investors and other stakeholders have a growing list of expectations for it. Greater diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I), optimal sustainability and enhanced workers’ rights are among some of your stakeholders’ demands. Alongside this, there are external factors to navigate: complex geopolitical shifts, the lingering COVID-19 pandemic and a potential recession. Presenting how you manage all these challenges is key and for that CEOs are increasingly relying on their Chief Communications Officers (CCO). A survey, carried out by Page entitled CCO views in 2023 , asked CCOs from organizations worldwide what they see as the key business risks and opportunities for organizations today. And, it asked CCOs for the advice they have for CEOs looking to manage those dangers and harness that potential for growth. When asked: what are […]

Less-covered, small caps sees more of an opportunity for mispricing due to the lack of information available to the public, which can be a good thing. So, could the stock still be trading at a low price relative to its actual value? Let’s take a look at Kontron’s outlook and value based on the most recent financial data to see if the opportunity still exists. What’s The Opportunity In Kontron? According to my valuation model, Kontron seems to be fairly priced at around 13% below my intrinsic value, which means if you buy Kontron today, you’d be paying a reasonable price for it. And if you believe the company’s true value is €20.58, then there isn’t much room for the share price grow beyond what it’s currently trading. Although, there may be an opportunity to buy in the future. This is because Kontron’s beta (a measure of share price volatility) is high, meaning its price movements will be exaggerated relative to […]

British Government complacent about growth opportunity of creative industries and is ignoring digital impact

British Government complacent about growth opportunity of creative industries and is ignoring digital impact

With the economy in flux and a recession looming, it’s surprising to see evidence that the current British Government is missing opportunities to harness sectors of the UK economy that have a proven track record in delivering growth. For example, the creative industries (which has a strong intersection with technological development) was worth more than £115 billion to the UK economy before the pandemic, making up as many as one in eight businesses across the country – and yet, according to a new report by the House of Lords Communications Committee, is largely being ignored by the current administration in charge. To put this into context, the UK’s creative industries, which includes everything from visual arts to software, marketing and design, in 2019 contributed more to the economy than aerospace, life sciences and automotive industries combined. Not only this, but the Committee’s report highlights how the government is seemingly failing to understand how the advancement of digital technologies could impact the creative industries in the near future – and is not putting in place regulatory frameworks to protect them. The report argues that if the UK’s creative industries are not put at the heart of the government’s future growth […]
