Disruption may be the new economic driver: Here’s how leaders can meet the challenge

Age of disruption: Business leaders must manage through short-term crises, while monitoring long-term trends. The Big Picture Crowdsource Innovation Business leaders must manage through a proliferation of shorter-term crises while keeping an eye on the longer-term forces shaping the future. How should we focus our all-too-finite resources of capital and time? In the 4th annual AlixPartners Disruption Index , 85% of CEOs say it has become increasingly difficult to know where to start. But a sector of companies is outpacing their competitors through bold action, increasing their recession readiness while positioning for near-term opportunities. The world keeps getting more complex. We all feel it every day, as longer-term structural changes remake our economies, societies and day-to-day lives. A lingering pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation, abruptly lower demand, energy shortages, extreme weather events, refugee crises and other catastrophes demand our immediate and close attention. At the same time, new technologies are reshaping how we work and live, populations are ageing, the post-Cold War order is fracturing, and the earth is warming. None of these challenges exists in isolation. They form a complex and interrelated network of feedback loops and amplification. To look at just one example, climate change has […]

‘We have called off this particular ascent on Everest’ – HSE’s head of digital transformation resigns

Professor Martin Curley The HSE’s head of digital transformation, Professor Martin Curley, has resigned. Prof Martin Curley tendered his resignation to the HSE as head of Digital Transformation and Open Innovation. He announced his resignation on LinkedIn this morning, writing: “We have called off this particular ascent on Everest. Bad weather prognosis and supply chain and funding blockages. We could still succeed but there would be too many casualties, including me. “Therefore as part of a well thought out, broader and evolving plan I resigned yesterday with immediate effect from the Health Service Executive “We have found a more promising alternative route, with a much more well situated and welcoming base camp. We have a great group of climbers and committed expedition sponsors and a great supply chain. We can move fast and be mobile. Success is not guaranteed but we are optimistic.” Prof Curley concluded his post by saying: “Hasta La Vista Baby!” followed by a number of hashtags, including #digitalhealthforall, #venividivici, #semperfidelis, and in capitals: #NIL ILLEGITIMI CARBORUNDUM, the last of which translates from mock Latin as: ‘Don’t let the bastards grind you down’. Prior to serving as digital transformation chief since 2018, Prof Curley was appointed […]

A year of opportunity for Africa

A year of opportunity for Africa

WASHINGTON, DC — The past year has been challenging for Africa. After a hopeful 2021, during which the continent-wide GDP increased by nearly 7 per cent and every region experienced real growth, the economy slowed in 2022 amid rising inflation, monetary tightening and geopolitical tensions. But it was also a year when African countries were finally able to make their voices heard on the global stage. At the start of another critical year, with the continent’s GDP projected to increase at a relatively modest pace of 4.1 per cent, governments can take several steps to boost economic activity and ensure a sustainable future. For starters, policymakers must foster trade and investment through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Under a fully implemented AfCFTA, Africa’s combined consumer and business spending is expected to reach $6.7 trillion by 2030 and $16.12 trillion by 2050, transforming value chains and potentially reducing poverty across the continent. Eight countries, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Tanzania and Tunisia, began trading under AfCFTA’s Guided Trade Initiative last year. To build on this momentum in 2023, policymakers must accelerate the implementation of the agreement’s next phases, improve intra-African coordination, and call attention to early successes. […]

Unlocking Opportunity in The Metaverse

Unlocking Opportunity in The Metaverse

The Metaverse is being touted as the next iteration of the internet, supporting ongoing online 3D virtual environments where virtual experiences, real-time 3D content and other related media are connected and accessible through VR/AR, as well as through classic devices such as PC or mobile. It’s essentially an immersive Web3 internet – Web3 being the idea of a new kind of internet services that is built using decentralised blockchain. With this new technology, users can meet in virtual spaces, represent themselves as avatars and share virtual objects.. Gartner predicts that by 2026 a quarter of people will spend at least an hour a day in the metaverse for work, shopping, education, social or entertainment. And 30% of organisations will have products and services delivered via the metaverse. However, despite the predictions, a recent YouGov survey revealed that just 37% of UK adults claim to be confident about describing the metaverse to others. Therefore, organisations who want to dip their toes in the turbulent waters of the metaverse need to understand the opportunities to help chart their way. At Reply, we see the emergence of the metaverse taking place within three distinct types of experiences which have evolved in the […]

How North Carolina can expand opportunity

How North Carolina can expand opportunity

Having enacted major reforms of North Carolina’s tax code, regulatory system, budgeting process, transportation funding, and education system over the past dozen years, what should the General Assembly do next? Phil Berger wants to double down on the legislature’s impressive record of conservative policy innovation. “We must build on that success so future generations of North Carolinians can reach even greater heights,” Berger said after his reelection as Senate President Pro Tem on January 11. “We must provide them with the tools needed to determine their future — from a world-class education to finding a good-paying job in a career of their choice, or to the freedom and opportunity to open their own business.” After his own reelection as Speaker of the House, Tim Moore described a similar vision . “Some of you represent communities where the population is going gangbusters, but others represent areas that are not seeing so much growth,” he told his colleagues. “Some of our challenges, as we move forward this year and enact policies, we will do all we can to make sure that the North Carolina dream of growing and moving forward is one that is enjoyed by everyone around this state.” My […]
