A “data first” approach must become the “North Star” of digital transformation, according to Hewlett Packard Enterprise President and CEO Antonio Neri. In an article written for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the HPE executive explores how, in his own words, organizations must align strategic, organizational, and technological choices with the overarching goal of leveraging data as a strategic asset. At a time when an enormous amount of decentralized data is being captured from numerous sources, including networked devices, machines, buildings, and infrastructures, unlocking its value offers opportunities for societal progress by using this data to take on geopolitical, economic, and environmental issues, said Neri. World governments are currently investing in data technologies, frameworks, and regulations in recognition of the transformative potential of data for economic and social progress, yet Neri believes many organizations are unprepared to capitalize on these opportunities. HPE conducted a recent survey of 8,600 executives that found the average organization’s data maturity score (the ability to create value from data) was only 2.6 on a five-point scale. Neri sees this as indicative of not only an inability to fully leverage data as a strategic asset, but also a lack of basic capabilities for doing […]

Cybersecurity is a key first step in digital transformation
New research commissioned by Telstra shows 41 percent of UK technology leaders identify cybersecurity as an enabler of innovation within their organization. The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has seen unprecedented levels of digital transformation. At the same time though an ever-evolving threat landscape means that security risks are on the rise, leaving organizations facing the difficult task of balancing rapid digitization with security. The survey, of 301 senior technology decision-makers in the UK, identifies cybersecurity solutions (22 percent) as the most important factor affecting business transformation, ahead of business processes (17 percent), employee commitment (16 percent), leadership focus/buy-in (14 percent) and external investment and funding (13 percent). The findings suggest that security is no longer an afterthought, but actually the first key step in digital transformation journeys. Rob Robinson, head of Telstra Purple EMEA, says: CISOs are continuously adapting to keep pace with the ever-changing threat landscape. Today, the evolution of the role means that CISOs now play a crucial part in shaping the security strategy of their organisation from within the board. The question now is how they can entrench security best practices and behaviours within the workforce in order to facilitate the digitisation that is required […]

OpenText commissioned survey reports that B2B integration helps to improve the cost, efficiency, and visibility of supply chain operations A new IDC White Paper, sponsored by OpenText™ ( NASDAQ: OTEX ), ( TSX: OTEX ), unveils that one of the biggest gaps in supply chain efficiency is the adoption of modern, digital technologies. As the study suggests, those companies more progressed in their business-to-business (B2B) digital transformation journey outperform those less progressed in revenue, profit, customer satisfaction, and responsiveness rate. Survey highlights With the current levels of supply chain complexity, global reach and partner/supplier diversity, it has become clear that the ‘old’ ways of doing things do not work in today’s modern supply chain. This study demonstrates the resiliency of digital transformation in the supply chain, with over 78% of respondents reporting that B2B integration has improved the overall performance of their supply chains 1 . “B2B integration represents the backbone of a digital-first, resilient supply chain and should be a top priority for those companies that remain encumbered by manual paper-based processes.” said Simon Ellis, Program Vice President at IDC 2 . B2B integration is necessary for a resilient supply chain Although supply chain resiliency is critical in […]

How Real-Time Data and Open-Source Software Fuel ‘AI Factories’
By Bryan Kirschner, Vice President, Strategy at DataStax In their 2020 book Competing in the Age of AI , Harvard Business School professors Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani make some bold predictions about the winning enterprises of the future. These organizations, which they refer to as “AI factories,” build a “virtuous cycle between user engagement, data collection, algorithm design, prediction, and improvement,” unlocking new paths to growth as software moves to the core of the enterprise. A little more than two years after the publication of their seminal work, data gathered from IT leaders and practitioners lend a lot of credence to Iansiti and Lakhani’s hypotheses — particularly those regarding the kind of technology architectures and strategies that engender success with AI. The AI factory Successful AI companies — think Apple, Netflix, Google, Uber, or FedEx — build innovative applications and, as they scale, start the flywheel of data, growth, and improvement spinning by gathering ever-growing amounts of real-time data, accessing it instantly, and tuning their predictions. User experiences become more personal and intuitive; key decisions can be made nearly instantaneously; and predictions can occur in real-time, empowering a business to improve outcomes in the moment. This unlocks new […]
