IT's Evolution: Chief Information Officers to Chief Growth Officers

IT’s Evolution: Chief Information Officers to Chief Growth Officers

In an era of shadow IT and business units having increased technical know-how, how IT is perceived matters. It says whether IT is invited to the table to discuss initiatives during the planning phase or afterwards to clean up the mess created and integrate what the business bought to the rest of the tech stack. Even more, it says whether IT, who often has the best understanding of "the art of the possible," is part of the digital transformation conversation . Given this, IT’s brand with the rest of the business and business leadership matters. So, what do CIOs think and how can they become brand builders? Establishing the Message for IT According to former CIO Joanna Young, “IT has a brand — known or unknown, deserved, or undeserved. IT leaders need to be thoughtful about their internal brand. Does it comport with the value they are or should be delivering?” Clearly, it is too easy for IT to be seen as separate from the real business. Or even worse as a utility. An effective IT organization demonstrates alignment for credibility and partnership. Everything starts, says Deb Gildersleeve, “with the rest of the business understanding that IT is in […]

Knoxville Chamber announces the ‘865 Opportunity Fund’ providing loans to small businesses

The "865 Opportunity Fund" was originally a loan fund from Pathway Learning. They worked with several banks to create the new small business fund. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Chamber announced Thursday that small business owners could have a new way to find funding. They said Pathway Lending, a nonprofit and a certified community development financial institution, worked with First Horizon, Pinnacle Financial Partners and Regions Bank to rebrand their existing loan fund. It is now known as the "865 Opportunity Fund." There is around $6 million available in that fund, and the Knoxville Chamber said it will provide loans between $5,000 and $50,000 to eligible small businesses. They said the fund is meant to address a gap in the kinds of funding small business owners can access. The 865 Opportunity Fund is also meant to help expand Knoxville’s small business ecosystem. It will also focus on providing funding for minority-owned and woman-owned businesses in Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Roane, Sevier and Union counties. "It offers small businesses the opportunity to have growth. We come in at early-stage companies, we see an opportunity for them. We look, we take a long look forward and we help them […]

Are AI-generated songs a ‘grotesque mockery’ of humanity or simply an opportunity to make a new kind of music?

Are AI-generated songs a ‘grotesque mockery’ of humanity or simply an opportunity to make a new kind of music?

Nick Cave has condemned a song designed and directed by ChatGPT. But new technology should be embraced, not feared Nick Cave performing at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre, 30 November 2022. The singer-songwriter described an AI-written song as ‘a replication, a kind of burlesque’. Earlier this week, a fan called Mark sent, for reasons not entirely clear, Nick Cave some lyrics written “in the style of Nick Cave” by the ChatGPT AI system. Suffice to say Cave was not pleased by the algorithmic imitation. “With all the love and respect in the world, this song is bullshit, a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human, and, well, I don’t much like it.” Fair enough: Why would he? But Cave’s response on his Red Hand Files blog raises issues relevant to all of us, as we contemplate what the AI revolution means to our own lives and careers. For Cave, ChatGPT could not write “a genuine song” but only “a replication, a kind of burlesque.” That’s because, he says, real songs arise from “the complex, internal human struggle of creation”: This is what we humble humans can offer, that AI can only mimic, the transcendent journey of the artist that […]

FTX token jumps after CEO says ‘viable business’ could emerge from bankruptcy

FTX’s CEO, John Jay Ray III, said Thursday he’s open to reviving the bankrupt exchange if the move provides a pathway to return money to the crypto trading venue’s customers and other creditors. "Everything is on the table," Ray told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Thursday . "There are stakeholders we’re working with who’ve identified what they see is a viable business." Following this interview, the crypto exchange’s token, FTT (FTT-USD), gained as much as 35%. FTT has lost 90% of its value since the end of October 2022. At its peak in September 2021, FTT traded north of $70 per token. The collapsed crypto exchange said Tuesday it has identified $5.5 billion of liquid assets, but also stated based on current estimates both the company’s international and U.S. based exchange still face a "substantial shortfall" from what the trading venues owe customers. A court document with the restructuring team’s most recent findings shows this $5.5 billion includes $1.7 billion of cash, $3.5 billion of crypto assets, and $0.3 billion of securities. Notably, $529 million of the company’s crypto assets are held in its FTT token. Last Wednesday, a lawyer with white shoe law firm, Sullivan […]

Company banned from doing business in North Dakota

Company banned from doing business in North Dakota

North Dakota Capitol in Bismarck. BISMARCK — A Las Vegas company called the Nu Life Institute and owner Edward Baca III are now banned from doing business in North Dakota, Attorney General Drew Wrigley announced Thursday, Jan. 19. This comes after an elderly woman paid $844 for what she believed was a product that would treat macular degeneration, according to a statement from Wrigley. Macular degeneration is a disease that blurs central vision as people grow older. The woman didn’t receive the product she ordered from Nu Life, but the seller said it sold her cosmetic makeup, according to Wrigley. Nu Life refused to issue a refund to the woman, and it didn’t cooperate with an investigation by the attorney general’s office, Wrigley said. “The conduct alleged against Nu Life Institute and Edward Baca III is alarming as is their refusal to cooperate with our investigation,” Wrigley said in the statement. “That lack of cooperation is irresponsible and unacceptable, and we will not tolerate additional risk of harm to our consumers.” A message left by The Forum for Nu Life in Las Vegas was not returned by publishing time.

Forbes Advisor analyzed 18 key metrics measuring business costs, business climate, financial accessibility, economy, and workforce to find the best states to start a business in 2023. Louisiana received low scores for its workforce, business climate and economy. Additionally, a recent survey found that 71% of Forbes Advisor readers would relocate to start their business. Highlights from the report: Indiana ranks as the best state to start a business. With a combination of low taxes, a reasonable cost of living, and a high percentage of the working-age population, Indiana provides ideal conditions for new businesses to succeed. New York ranks as the worst state to start a business. A high cost of living, high unemployment rate, and a relatively low survival rate (at 79%) makes the city that never sleeps a less-than-ideal place to start a business. Washington state has the highest business survival rate across the nation at 89%, while Hawaii has the lowest at just 75%. […]
