AI Goes Mainstream: Government Faces New Opportunity, Challenges

AI Goes Mainstream: Government Faces New Opportunity, Challenges

The transformative effects of artificial intelligence are coming faster than we recognize. For government, it poses an enormous opportunity for unprecedented efficiency. But, it also brings a host of regulatory challenges. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has significant implications for state and local governments. One of the main implications is the potential for AI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government services. For example, AI-powered chatbots can provide 24/7 customer service for citizens, while machine learning algorithms can analyze large amounts of data to identify patterns and insights that can inform decision-making. Additionally, AI can be used to automate routine tasks, such as processing paperwork and data entry, freeing up government employees to focus on more complex and value-added tasks. However, there are also concerns about the impact of AI on jobs and privacy, and governments will need to consider these issues as they implement AI-based solutions. Analysts hail AI as the next wave of technology. So I tried it out with the new chatbot, ChatGPT . I asked it to tell us about the implications of AI for government and federalism, and the bot wrote the first two paragraphs above. The result: Not too bad. […]

Daily Juice closes all Austin locations after 20 years in business

Daily Juice closes all Austin locations after 20 years in business

One of Austin’s longest running juice and smoothie operators has called it quits. Daily Juice Cafe is permanently closing all four of its Austin locations after Sunday. “We are so grateful to you all for supporting us through this journey, through the pandemic and throughout this last tough year of rising food costs, labor costs and rent,” Daily Juice owners Cary and Joanie Frieden alerted customers via email Wednesday. Cary Frieden told the American-Statesman that the leases on the four locations were ending within the year. Though he believed they were prepared to fix any current issues and navigate the path ahead — made rockier in recent years by high prices of rents, good and labor — the parents of four decided it was time to make a transition. "As much as we loved being a part of this and being part of this health journey personally and with so many of our clients and employees, there are too many other things that we are going to need to pursue personally,” Frieden said, calling the closures "bittersweet." The email stated that the Westlake location has already closed and told customers that if they had gift cards or prepaid cleanses, […]

Seaboard Station area business owners say nearby construction has limited parking, which has decreased profits

Seaboard Station area business owners say nearby construction has limited parking, which has decreased profits

RALEIGH, N.C. — Big changes are coming to the Seaboard Station area in Raleigh. A mixed-use development is under construction where people will live and shop. However, it’s causing a problem for some neighboring businesses. Some business owners said the project is taking away parking spots from the customers they depend on. Michael Bell is the owner of the record store Hunky Dory at 111 Seaboard Ave. Suite 116. There is construction on massive new buildings outside his business. Bell said the footprint of the project is swallowing up parking spots where customers used to park. He said the construction has taken away an entire row of public parking, which is about 20 parking spots. “We were already struggling with finding places to park,” Bell said. Mon Macaron dessert shop founder Autumn Hicks echoed Bell’s sentiments about parking. “The last six months, it has been a major issue for us,” Hicks said. Bell said there are times it’s so bad that even his employees can’t find a parking spot to open the doors to the business. “Are you pushing us out, or are you going to do something about this?” Bell asked of city leaders. Bell wants to know […]

Netflix: Password sharing ‘undermines’ business, warns crackdown will intensify

Yahoo Finance entertainment reporter Allie Canal breaks down Netflix’s fourth-quarter earnings results and the news that Reed Hastings will be stepping down from his CEO role. Netflix ( NFLX ) freeloaders, beware! The company is ramping up its password sharing crackdown. Following fourth quarter earnings results on Thursday that saw subscriber numbers leap past expectations, the company warned in its quarterly letter to shareholders it will be intensifying its push to combat password sharing. "Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly. Today’s widespread account sharing (100M+ households) undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve Netflix, as well as build our business," Netflix said. The company explained it’s been building additional new features to improve the overall Netflix experience, including the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and to transfer a profile to a new account. Members can also pay extra if they want to share the platform with people they don’t live with. "As we work through this transition – and as some borrowers stop watching either because they don’t convert to extra members or full paying accounts – near term engagement, as measured by […]
