What Lord Darzi’s report means for digital transformation in the NHS

What Lord Darzi’s report means for digital transformation in the NHS

Lord Darzi’s recent review of the NHS has revealed startling inequities in digital access within the service. (Image: Shutterstock) In July 2024, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care commissioned Lord Darzi, a surgeon and former health minister, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the state of the NHS in England. The report concluded that the health service is in a “critical condition”, with the NHS facing “serious trouble” in several core areas of performance – judgements that come hot on the heels of the government developing its ten-year health plan, due to be published in Spring 2025. One of the recurring themes to emerge from Darzi’s report was the untapped potential of technology and technological innovation within the NHS, calling for a “tilt towards technology” if the health service, first established in 1948, is to keep pace in the modern world. With Darzi characterising the NHS as being “in the foothills of digital transformation”, the report has placed a spotlight on the need for digital change and a fundamental shift towards technology. A missed opportunity for digital transformation in the NHS While the NHS must be able to pay for day-to-day expenses such as staff wages, […]

The journey towards becoming a true digital enterprise

The journey towards becoming a true digital enterprise

If you want to push digital transformation successfully, you need a holistic view of multiple, interconnected aspects. “And when all blocks are in place, then a company can call itself a true digital enterprise,” says Gerard Wijers, partner at Anderson MacGyver. A discussion on what this means and what is needed. Digital enterprises are those that proactively integrate technology into their core strategies in order to achieve superior customer experiences, better operational efficiency, and greater innovation. Companies position themselves to become digital enterprises in order to stay ahead in today’s competitive landscape. It also entails leveraging data, artificial intelligence, and automation, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and agility. Businesses that fail to adopt a forward-thinking approach, on the other hand, risk falling behind by merely reacting to digital trends rather than proactively staying ahead of the curve. “My recommendation is to start thinking like a digital enterprise: Holistically and end-to-end. Based on governance and personal leadership, create business strategies with explicit digital ambitions, leveraging technology and data to differentiate yourself from the competition,” notes Wijers. “Build strategies that are scalable. Meanwhile, keep the overall IT landscape as simple and fit for purpose as possible. Place ownership and […]

NHS logo with coins placed around it An additional £1 billion ($1.3 billion) has been allocated to NHS technology following Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s statement that moving the NHS from ‘analogue to digital’ is one of the three big shifts the UK Government will focus on. Following supplier consultations, the Digital Workplace Solutions 2 framework value was increased from £1.5 billion ($2 billion) to £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion). This extra funding will be spent on improving hardware and software capabilities. The NHS Shared Business Services (NHS SBS) procurement notice for this framework is now looking for contractors with deep experience in areas where the NHS needs the most digital support, namely IT infrastructure and software development. This expanded contract will see a total of 30 technology suppliers work with the NHS to boost digital capabilities, including making improvements to the NHS app to give users more control over their data and better access to healthcare services. Achieving digital patient records, a feat that has proven extremely difficult to reach is another goal of the NHS. Today, many hospitals and healthcare facilities still rely on paper document systems, adding to delays hospitals already face. After the results of Lord Darzi’s […]

He added that 97% of trusts will have an EPR in place by March 2026 , which he said “is not fast enough but they will have one”, and the remaining 3% will […]

Why businesses can have high expectations for low code

Why businesses can have high expectations for low code

José Carlos Pereira. Background image generated by AI. Image: © Noesis/Jane Henderson/MADGALLERY/Stock.adobe.com Noesis’ José Carlos Pereira argues that low code will allow businesses to keep pace with digital transformation and stay competitive. In today’s highly competitive market, businesses are under immense pressure to deliver high-performance results and achieve their goals in shorter timeframes. However, companies often face significant barriers to digitising and modernising their processes to maintain competitiveness. Most of these barriers are related to the technologies they use to support their digital transformation programs. Decades of legacy systems, decentralised databases, scarce and costly resources, and the lack of access to cost-effective solutions have led to many postponing their digitalisation efforts. The abundance of sometimes conflicting information available makes it even more difficult for business leaders to get the right advice and understand what approach would work best for their business and integrate smoothly with their operations. While companies tend to focus on the work at hand, without setting sufficient time and resources aside for innovation, there is an efficient solution that can help businesses accelerate their innovation and digitalisation projects: low-code development. What is low-code development? Data from Gartner shows that 70pc of all software development will include […]
