Article Open access Huiqin Zhang , Yuxiang Zhang & Junwei Zhao Humanities and Social Sciences Communications 11 , Article number: 1326 (2024) Cite this article Metrics Abstract Digital transformation (DX) has become an important strategy for the sustainable development of traditional manufacturers. However, the impact of DX on the environment is still inconclusive, and whether it is beneficial for manufacturers to reduce total carbon emissions remains to be examined. Therefore, based on the carbon cap-and-trade policy, this paper employs a game-theoretic model to study the DX strategies of duopolistic manufacturers and to explore the influence of low-carbon policy on these strategies. Additionally, we compare the total carbon emissions before and after DX implementation by manufacturers, discussing the environmental implications of DX. And we innovatively segment the market into two scenarios: one with a low digital technology level and the other with a high digital technology level. Our research demonstrates that the appropriate DX strategy can not only boost manufacturers’ profits but also enhance their ability to withstand external shocks. In the scenario with a high level of digital technology, manufacturers can achieve greater profits and are more likely to reduce total carbon emissions, resulting in a win-win situation. Synthetic beauty. The new muse, driven by machines
Move over, Clio; the algorithm is the new muse. Code and Theory’s Craig Elimeliah explores a world where machines shape human desires, as part of The Drum’s Fashion & Beauty Focus . A digital muse provides colorful inspiration At the center of fashion and culture, where artistry and design meet commerce, a quiet change is happening. The muse, long the ethereal figure of inspiration, is evolving. Today, synthetic beauty, crafted not from nature, but from data, is shaping many of the trends we see in design, on runways, in storefronts and on screens around the world. But what does it mean when the source of our aesthetic desires is no longer the designer, the model, the artist, or even the culture, but rather algorithms and (synthetic) data? At first, it might seem unsettling. The idea of beauty being driven by machines trained on huge datasets feels almost dystopian. Yet there’s something undeniably profound about this evolution. In a world where our identities are increasingly mediated by digital platforms, synthetic beauty offers a kind of mirror, reflecting not just our aspirations but also our complexities, contradictions and desires. What makes this new muse so compelling is its paradoxical nature. Synthetic […]

He explained: “I’m not in a position to speak about the tax system, so I cannot comment on that matter.”

How cities can finance their digital transformation
03 October 2024 by Eurocities The journey toward digital transformation is a priority for local governments, aligned with broader European goals such as those set out in the NextGenerationEU recovery plan and its Recovery and Resilience Facility Plan . Yet, despite their shared commitment, these public authorities face significant challenges in financing their digital ambitions and navigating complex administrative landscapes. Funding challenges for cities’ digital ambitions As Arnis Gulbis, Director of Riga Digital Agency, underscores, “financing is a crucial component of our digital strategy, and we continuously seek new funding opportunities to expand and enhance our digital initiatives.” Arnis Gulbis, Director of Riga Digital Agency “More specifically, we need funding for large-scale projects like smart transportation systems and digital healthcare infrastructure,” explains Gulbis. The city, keen to leverage technology for improved public services, has already allocated approximately €10 million towards digital transformation in the last year, but the need for further investment remains pressing. Bridging the funding gaps However, for many cities, the journey is far from straightforward. “There are still gaps in funding, especially for projects like digital twinning, IoT, data spaces and cybersecurity,” says Alma Serica, EU Policies and Projects Officer of the City of Arezzo. For […]
How to Improve Your Digital Transformation Project Failure Rate
Research has shown digital transformation projects in the APAC region fail at a high rate — and have mixed success at best. For example, Gartner research recently released in Australia found that the success rate for CIOs running digital projects was about 48%, which analyst vice president analyst Daniel Sanchez-Reina said “was like a coin flip.” He termed the problem the “curse of random success.” Vishal Dhawan, APAC regional managing director at software firm Planview, said his company serves 4,500 customers globally — including over 200 in Australia and more than 50 in New Zealand. The organisation recently analysed 2,500 value streams managed through its software, revealing that companies are only seeing 8% of their planned initiatives being tangibly delivered. SEE: Accenture finds Australian firms lag in digital transformation “I think today, boards, CXOs, they are all saying, ‘Hey, I’ve been spending millions on digital transformation. Can somebody show me the value I’m realising against these digital initiatives?’ If you look at the numbers and the success rates, I think the waste on digitalisation is quite alarming,” Dhawan said. However, as he explained to TechRepublic, organisations can improve their success rate by focusing on culture, enhancing decision-making capabilities, and […]
