The digital transformation of Ukraine’s air cargo sector amid war

The digital transformation of Ukraine’s air cargo sector amid war

The war in Ukraine has disrupted not only the country’s airspace but also its entire air cargo logistics infrastructure. However, this crisis has accelerated digital transformation, forcing aviation and logistics companies to rethink their operations, embrace automation, and find alternative solutions. From rerouted supply chains to the rise of automation and AI-driven logistics, Ukraine’s air cargo industry is undergoing a radical shift. But what role does digitalisation play in ensuring business continuity, and how will it shape the sector’s future in a post-war economy? The closure of Ukrainian airspace forced logistics companies to pivot overnight, shifting operations to multimodal transportation that integrates air, road, and rail freight. This sudden transformation created an urgent need for digital platforms that could handle complex logistics in real-time. “The war in Ukraine has significantly impacted air cargo operations, compelling logistics providers to optimise delivery routes and implement advanced digital solutions,” Awery’s CEO and Founder, Vitaly Smilianets, explained. “With increased lead times and disrupted supply chains, automation and AI-driven logistics have become critical tools in adapting to this new reality.” Automation and AI: The new standard in Ukrainian air cargo Before the war, digital transformation in Ukraine’s air cargo industry was progressing gradually. Human-centered design’s critical role in both digital and sustainability transformation

Human-centered design’s critical role in both digital and sustainability transformation

67dd6b04754ae39261cbf121 Dreamstime M 148828474 March 24, 2025 A similar tendency to digital transformation is emerging with sustainability, when manufacturers mistake small efficiency improvements for a massive reimagining of how they do business and produce their products. Alexander Tepper What you’ll learn: In 2024, 77% of organizations agreed that “we are experiencing a dual transition towards a more digital and sustainable world.” Organizations going through digital transformations too often stop with the digitization and optimization of their existing processes. Achieving longer lasting and more meaningful results requires a transformative effort to reimagine the customer experience. Editors note: This is the second part of a two-part series on sustainability in manufacturing and its role in digital transformation. The first part appeared March 20. As 2025 progresses, we continue on a path of accelerating transformation in manufacturing. This era began in the mid-2000s and gained momentum in 2020, when pandemic restrictions pushed organizations to make rapid digital transformations to survive massive disruptions. The rate of technical transformation’s pace is unchanged since COVID, and now that shift is joined by an equally urgent need to transition to sustainable products, services, and business models. Today, many companies and institutions are managing both transformations at […]

The role of hybrid multi-cloud in enabling digital transformation and innovation

The role of hybrid multi-cloud in enabling digital transformation and innovation

Mahalingam Vaithilingam The accelerated pace of the digital era has driven businesses to adapt and innovate, exploring transformative technologies that drive growth and efficiency. An emerging game-changer in this landscape is the hybrid multi-cloud solution, a blend of public and private clouds that cater to versatile IT needs. Hybrid multi-cloud is the new normal. It offers the ‘best of both worlds’, combining the flexibility of public clouds with the security of private ones. Its cloud-native features offer scalability and resilience, and through the future mode of operations (FMO) blueprint, it presents a boundary-less multi-hybrid cloud environment. Unlocking digital transformation with the hybrid cloud unfolds through a multi-cloud approach, optimizing workload orchestration and employing domain-specific SaaS solutions. The elastic nature of public clouds allows for an effortless evolution, responding quickly to changing business needs. A recent cloud usage report showed that 80-85 percent of IT professionals picked hybrid cloud as their ideal cloud model for their business. The traditional private cloud has expanded to a hybrid multi-cloud, comprising hyper-scalers, private, and Edge. Enterprises are adopting cloud strategies to utilize cloud-native features such as scalability, as-a-service availability, and resiliency. The traditional private cloud has expanded to a hybrid multi-cloud, comprising hyper-scalers, […]

Augmented reality goes to work for nuclear fusion

Augmented reality goes to work for nuclear fusion

The ITER Organization has begun deploying software that allows people to walk around the site and compare as-is work to as-designed 3D models on their tablets and smartphones. ITER’s new augmented reality tool not only helps find problems, but it also helps find solutions, by making it easy to determine what needs to be corrected. "Issue" notifications can be generated in the field and assigned for treatment. Using an off-the-shelf augmented reality application called Gamma AR , engineers and technicians at ITER can now see if an installed component fits in the way it was planned during design—and much more. The software is similar to the app that allows IKEA customers to see what a piece of furniture would look like in their house or office. “You have as-built in front of you, and you can project the as-designed version on top of that,” says Lucas Scherrer, building integration manager in the Integration and CAD Support Section. “Several features of the application help you spot any differences.” Lucas and his colleagues worked with the surveillance and field design teams to estimate the benefits of the application, which they expect to include savings in both cost and time. A single […]

Reskilling for the future: Business schools as catalysts for workforce transformation

Reskilling for the future: Business schools as catalysts for workforce transformation

Authored by Sanjay Padode , Founder of Jagdish Sheth School of Management and President Vijaybhoomi University . Alvin Toffler a very well know futurist mentioned quite early in the 1970’s aptly stated, “The illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”. We are in the first half of the 21st century and this is happening. In the past two decades, the evolution of required skills has been shaped by rapid technological advances, the automation of routine tasks, and the increasing complexity of the work environment. While technical skills related to digital transformation, AI, and big data have become indispensable, the importance of soft skills —such as problem-solving, adaptability, and emotional intelligence—has only grown. The velocity of change in the required skills has created an imminent need for reskilling and upskilling the workforce. Before we get down to understand the role of the business schools in supporting the reskilling requirement, it makes sense to understand the evolution of the skills as predicted by the World Economic Forum ( WEF ) year on year over the last decade. 2010s: The Rise of Digital Literacy and Automation Technical […]

Why smart surveillance, AI are essential to SA’s digital transformation

Why smart surveillance, AI are essential to SA’s digital transformation

Rudie Opperman, manager for engineering and training, MEA, Axis Communications. Smart surveillance and AI can give impetus to SA’s digital transformation process, and although budgets are constrained, there is a clear opportunity for government to leverage the technology to support its ICT and telecommunications objectives. This is according to Rudie Opperman, manager for engineering and training, MEA at network solutions provider Axis Communications. Opperman believes smart surveillance and AI support digital transformation by enhancing security, providing real-time insights, operational efficiency, service delivery and data-driven decision-making. This is particularly relevant given Cyril Ramaphosa’s SONA 2025 address in which he underlined several technology priorities, including broadcasting digital migration, ICT policy overhaul, the national AI strategy and Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service. With SA focusing on digital transformation despite economic pressures, smart technologies must be cost-effective, scalable and future proof, says Opperman. Africa’s largest economy has work to do to keep up with the rapid implementation of smart city technology among counterparts on the continent, with inconsistency and shortage of digital skills two prominent challenges. See also “South Africa has made notable progress in smart city development, with initiatives focused on public safety, traffic management and infrastructure optimisation. However, implementation remains […]
